Loaf on the Job

Chindogu Absurd Product // IoT Hardware Device

"Loaf on the Job" is a whimsical, IoT-enabled alternative hardware device born from the absurdist philosophy of Chindogu. Designed during the peak of remote work (WFH) culture, the project serves as a playful commentary on digital workplace surveillance and burnout, mapping intensive cardiovascular physical exercise directly onto remote digital mouse activity to cheat algorithmic productivity tracking.

Technical Details & Engineering

EMBEDDED HARDWARE & IOT NETWORK
Arduino Framework: Engineered with Wi-Fi integrated microcontrollers to support low-latency remote communication. Sensor modules track individual jump rope rotations, converting localized physical motion into precise wireless servo/motor commands to spin a mechanical turntable underneath the host computer's mouse.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN & FABRICATION
Fusion 360 & 3D Printing: Modeled custom mechanical housing for the turntable gear system, keeping strict structural tolerances for mouse tracking accuracy. prim-sanded and finished with industrial-grade multi-layer spray paint coat treatment.

Interaction Logic & Satire

PILLAR 01

Subverting Digital Surveillance

The device offers a paradoxical escape route from the psychological exhaustion of modern work-from-home conditions. To counter enterprise tracking software that demands constant interaction, the system bridges corporate laziness with intensive physical fitness, transforming traditional "slacking off" into a highly rigorous full-body exercise routine.

No matter where you are situated in the domestic space, the system maintains a robust Wi-Fi link. By breaking free from the static boundaries of the computer desk, users can actively burn calories in another room while seamlessly tricking the machine into reporting peak professional activity.

PILLAR 02

Kinetic Mouse Manipulation Loop

The core hardware loop maps physical jump rope rotations directly onto a custom-built mechanical mouse mover. Every single revolution of the jumping rope dynamically translates into kinetic energy, rotating the precision turntable tucked under the optical mouse sensor.

This creates a poetic, externalized psychological landscape where a user's exhaustion is met with mechanical simulation. The absurdist correlation between jumping in place and moving a cursor highlights the bizarre ways workers navigate algorithmic overwatch, creating a functional piece of behavioral interactive art.
